Tips For Dealing With Insomnia And Anxiety

Not being able to sleep can cause anxiety in some people and anxiety can make it difficult to sleep. It is definitely a vicious cycle. Dealing with insomnia is not only frustrating; it can negatively affect your health in the long run. Fortunately, you do not have to live with insomnia for the rest of your life. Here are some different ways you can treat insomnia and anxiety.
Exercise on a Regular Basis
Exercising each day can really make it a lot easier to get to sleep each night because it makes you tired and more relaxed. Try to work out at least 30 minutes each day. For example, you can take a walk around your neighborhood, ride your bike or take an aerobics class at a gym. You can also consider doing yoga exercises in the morning to feel more relaxed. However, you should avoid exercising right before you go to bed.
Limit Alcohol, Nicotine and Caffeine
If you are having problems falling asleep, you need to limit your intake of alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. Although alcohol can help you fall asleep at first, the quality of sleep will not be very good. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants, so they can make it very difficult for you to fall asleep.
Do not Take Naps In the Middle of the Day
Even if you are very tired, you should try to avoid taking naps in the middle of the day. If you take naps in the daytime, it will make it much more difficult for you to fall asleep at night. Instead of taking a nap, take a brisk walk for at least 15 minutes to refresh yourself.
Develop a Relaxing Bedtime Routine
It is very important to develop a relaxing bedtime routine if you want to fall asleep faster. If you properly prepare for bedtime, you will alert your body that it is time to sleep. Do things that help you relax an hour before bedtime like reading a book, taking a bubble bath or listening to soft music.
Stick To a Regular Sleep Schedule
One of the best ways to get back into a regular sleep rhythm is to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try to wake up at your usual time in the morning even if you feel very tired.
Deal With the Stress in Your Life
In order to completely get rid of your insomnia, you have to deal with the stress in your life that is leading to your anxiety. Whether it is due to work or family problems, you have to figure out a way to deal with stress so that you can sleep better. For example, you can consider talking to a therapist.
If you follow these tips, you should be able to fall asleep easier. However, if none of the above suggestions work, you should definitely make an appointment with your doctor. He will help you get to the root of your sleeping problem and possibly prescribe you some medicine.
